The worldwide mobile phone market grew 21.7 percent in the first quarter of 2010, according to new figures from IDC, a strong rebound from the market contraction seen a year earlier. Vendors shipped 294.9 million units in the first quarter of 2010 compared to 242.4 million units in the first quarter of last year, which had seen a 16.6 percent year-on-year decline.
Handset shipments suffered another annual decline in the third quarter but are forecast to rebound in the key final quarter of the year, according to two new analyst reports published this week. Strategy Analytics estimates that global handset shipments reached 291 million units in 3Q09, down 4 percent from 304 million units a year earlier. Separate data from IDC suggested similar trends.
