Security company RSA announced a service designed to enable organisations to detect and take action against rogue mobile apps which attempt to serve up malware or phishing attacks.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the US Justice Department is “intensifying” an investigation into whether companies including Apple, Microsoft and RIM could use the patent portfolio they recently acquired from Nortel Networks to “unfairly hobble competing smartphones using Google’s Android software,” as it was separately reported that Google had strengthened its own patent armoury with an acquisition of intellectual property from IBM.
Cash-rich Apple contributed more than half of the US$4.5 billion paid last month for Nortel’s 6,000-strong patent portfolio. The Cupertino-based technology giant was part of a winning consortium that also included EMC, Ericsson, Microsoft, Research In Motion and Sony.
