Samsung has made a significant play in the mobile movies sector via the launch of a new movie store for the latest Samsung mobile handsets. Over 1,000 movies and TV shows will be available to download from Warner Brothers, Paramount, Universal and Momentum Pictures, and downloads will be available to own or rent. The service will be rolled out initially in the UK and Germany before being made available in other key European markets later in 2009. Samsung said in a statement that the service would be compatible with handsets that include its ‘Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode’ (AMOLED) touch screen technology, such as the Tocco Ultra Edition. Additional devices will be compatible with the Samsung Movies store as they come to market in 2009, the vendor said. The service will also be expanded to notebooks, mp3 and mp4 players, and Samsung TVs.
The new service will launch with over 500 titles from Warner Brothers, Paramount, Universal and Momentum Pictures. By the end of the first quarter of 2009 a further 500 titles will be added, followed by an additional 1,000 movies and TV shows by the end of June 2009. Prices will start from £2.49 for a 24 hour rental or from £4.99 to own. The platform is powered by Acetrax, a digital movie retailer that has holding agreements with the major movie studios as well as independents and record labels.
