Samsung, LG debut Android Wear smart watches

26 JUN 2014

Google announced that two smart watches powered by its Android Wear platform are now available for order, from South Korean consumer electronics giants Samsung and LG Electronics.

A third has been promised from the currently Google-owned Motorola Mobility, which will be the first to have a round face, rather than the square displays used in the others. This is set for launch “later this summer”.

Samsung is offering Gear Live (pictured), which follows an earlier Android-powered watch from the vendor, as well as a Tizen-powered wearable announced at Mobile World Congress.

It has a 1.63-inch screen, heart rate monitor, and Bluetooth v4.0 LE connectivity, as well as being dust and water resistant.

In addition to sales through Google Play, it will subsequently be available in Samsung retail stores. It is priced at £169 for the UK market, and pairs with any device powered by Android 4.3 or above.

LG is offering G Watch, which it claims will “appeal to a mass audience with its simple minimalist design, quick and “glance-able access to useful information and seamless connectivity with other Android devices”.

It has a 1.65-inch screen and, like the Samsung device, is dust and water resistant. UK pricing is £159.
