Oberthur Technologies chosen for Samsung Pay in Europe

18 MAY 2015

Samsung named French security firm Oberthur Technologies as one of the suppliers for the launch of its mobile payment service in Europe later this year.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge in Europe are equipped with the vendor’s NFC-embedded secure element, meaning they are enabled for contactless payments.

Samsung Pay is due to launch in the US and Korea this summer, followed by Europe and China thereafter.

The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge were launched in Europe at the end of April.

Banks who contract with Samsung and Oberthur will be able to offer NFC-based payment cards in the Samsung Pay app.

Samsung and Oberthur will manage enrolment, provisioning and lifecycle processes for the banks, so the card issuers can deploy NFC-based service without major investment in infrastructure and with a reduced time-to-market, so the companies claim.

Previous vendors to have been named as suppliers to Samsung Pay include NXP (for the Chinese market) and Infineon (undisclosed).

“We are very proud to have been the first selected by Samsung for the launch of Samsung Pay in Europe and to bring this new service to the many banks who will partner with us in Europe,” said Marek Juda, managing director of Oberthur’s solutions business unit.
