Pinterest, the fast-growing photo-sharing social network, is to launch as an iPad app soon, the company’s CEO has revealed.

In an interview with CNN at the recent SXSW show in the US, Ben Silbermann said that the iPad app was “in the works” but declined to give a release date. He also said that the site will soon rollout new profile pages that have been redesigned to look "more beautiful" and to display users' influencers more prominently.

Pinterest is currently available only as an iPhone app, and it seems the app is likely to come to the Apple tablet before it comes to non-iOS platforms such as Android.

According to recent figures from Internet-monitoring firm comScore, Pinterest has more than 11 million unique monthly users and has doubled its audience over the past six months. Moreover, the average Pinterest user is thought to spend 98 minutes per month on the site – more than any other social platform except Tumblr and Facebook.

Pinterest allows users to create an online scrapbook by “pinning” images found on the web. According to CNN, the service has proved especially popular with women who use it to store and share crafts, recipes, wedding tips and home-decorating ideas.

However, Silbermann said that new use cases are emerging, noting the example of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, which shares images from its collection via the service. "It's exciting to see people using the product in ways we never expected," he said.

An ex-Google employee, Silbermann co-founded Pinterest in 2009.
