Walmart Pay is now available across the United States, reaching the feat just over seven months after the US retailer first unveiled the mobile payments service.

The proprietary service, which launched in December, had set a target to complete nationwide availability during the first half of the year (and therefore missed this deadline by a few days), but said in a statement it can now be used in more than 4,600 of its stores in the country.

It further revealed that 88 per cent of transactions came from repeat users, while seeing a 45 per cent lift in transactions in the last week alone.

Daniel Eckert, SVP – services, at Walmart US, said the company is now looking at ways to expand the use of its app.

“Walmart Pay is just the beginning,” he said. “We’re building deeper relationships with our customers across our ecosystem and are looking forward to delivering new tools like Walmart Pay that allow them to use the Walmart App as their remote control for a faster, more convenient shopping experience.”

The payments service differentiates from other solutions because it is based on a QR code checkout system, and only works at Walmart stores, on both iOS and Android devices.

At checkout, users open the app, choose the payment feature, and then use the camera app to scan a code displayed at the register. An electronic receipt is then sent to the app to be viewed by the customer.

Walmart stores also notably do not accept Apple Pay or other rival services.
