Customers of mobile remittance firm WorldRemit sending cash to friends and family in Tanzania can now deliver it via a Tigo Pesa mobile wallet.

The new method is available to WorldRemit customers sending money from 35 countries and complements other options for recipients including bank transfer, cash pick-up from a designated agent or converting the funds into a mobile airtime top up.

The firm told Mobile World Live that it had previously struck interoperability deals with operators in a number of other markets: Safaricom in Kenya; Globe and rival Smart in the Philippines; Telesom in Somaliland; MTN in Uganda and Econet Wireless in Zimbabwe.

WorldRemit closed a $40 million investment round earlier this year when CEO Ismail Ahmed (pictured) told Mobile World Live that his firm’s business was being driven by the growing number of users, particularly in Africa, who receive payments on their mobile handsets, as well as a broad shift from offline to online remittances.

Migrants from Tanzania sent $75 million back home in 2013, according to World Bank figures mentioned by the firm. The same research found that remittances to Tanzania has more than doubled since 2008.
