SmartPass, a mobile contactless payments service developed by Vodafone and Visa, will be launched first in Spain before the end of the year.

By downloading the ‘Vodafone SmartPass’ app, which includes a pre-paid Visa account that can be topped up when needed, Vodafone customers will be able to make NFC-enabled payments on their smartphones.

Those without an NFC-enabled phone can apply for a card that can be attached to the mobile device to enable contactless payments.

SmartPass will only be available via Visa initially, but Vodafone hopes to add more credit and debit card providers soon under the name Vodafone Wallet. Discount coupons and loyalty programs are also planned for 2014.

As well as using SmartPass for payments, Vodafone said it can be used for direct cash transfers between two people.

SmartPass payments will be possible in around 250,000 retail outlets across Spain, says the mobile operator.

“In the long term, our goal is that customers do not have to use a physical wallet,” said Iñaki Cabrera, Director of mCommerce at Vodafone Spain,
