Vodafone is rolling out a mobile wallet starting in Spain followed by Germany in mid-December, and then the Netherlands, UK and Italy in Spring, 2014.

In addition to virtual credit and debit cards, the wallet will also contain travel cards, loyalty cards, gift cards and vouchers.

The first occupant of the wallet is Vodafone’s own Smartpass app, which enables users to make payments at the point-of-sale when used in conjunction with an NFC-based smartphone.

Smartpass was developed with Visa and enables users to make purchases at terminals where Visa contactless technology is deployed.

Vodafone is also working with major European banks to get their cards into the wallet.

The wallet is the first built on the GlobalPlatform standard, said the operator.

For customers without an NFC-based smartphone, Vodafone is offering a NFC tag that can be attached to their handset.
