A new partnership enables the remote management of the cellular connectivity used by point-of-sale payment terminals.

The solution combines Oberthur’s embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card (eUICC) and remote subscription management skills with Ingenico’s smart terminals and Vodafone’s global IoT platform.

The firms are pushing their joint initiative for merchants as “eliminating all logistic constraints towards SIM management”.

By enabling the remote installation and management of operator profiles, the partners say they improve operational efficiency and “enhance merchants’ expertise with better connectivity and ready-to-use payment terminals”.

“Nowadays, ensuring a merchant’s payment terminal is operational accounts for up to 17 per cent of the overall terminal total cost of ownership. With this new solution, the payment terminal will embed a SIM that can be set up and updated over-the-air,” explained Jacques Guérin, EVP Smart terminals for Ingenico Group.

Field services around SIM card logistics will become unnecessary following the intiative, he added, saving estate owners time and costs while simplifying merchants’ set-up.
