Visa Europe has announced its new digital wallet service – V.me – will launch in autumn 2012, although initially only on a trial basis in the UK, France and Spain. The credit card giant also announced payments processor WorldPay as a key supplier behind the wallet service in the UK. Visa said further suppliers including banks and retailers will be announced for each of the three launch markets soon. V.me will be available through Visa’s member banks and will be accessible to users via smartphone, tablet, laptop and PC. Users will be able to put multiple cards in their individual wallet.

Visa says V.me will also be attractive to retailers because it streamlines the checkout process, which is where WorldPay comes into the picture. The supplier’s role is to ensure V.me matches retailers’ requirements and will stand out in what is becoming a crowded market.  Visa Europe is bullish on mobile payments. Chief executive Peter Ayliffe predicted earlier this year that over half of the card giant’s transactions in Europe will be on a mobile device by 2020.
