Zapp, the start-up backed by VocaLink, has hired the executive credited with developing Barclays Bank’s mobile payment service, Pingit and Buyit.

The start-up said Ian Sayers (pictured), the former head of mobile and digital architecture with the bank, will be joining in October, ahead of Zapp’s proposed launch in 2014.

Zapp also announced two immediate appointments: Peter Keenan as CEO and Justin Basini as chief marketing & product officer. The company is chaired by David Yates, who is VocaLink’s CEO.

Keenan’s previous roles including managing director of Currys and Dixons in the UK and Ireland, as well as head of UK and global propositions function with HSBC.

Basini’s previous experience includes being CMO of Capital One and working for internet start-ups.

Zapp aims to launch a service that enables transactions via mobile handset at the point of sale and online.

Barclays’ Pingit service enables P2P money transfer service between users. The Buyit service enables users to scan QR codes on advertising to make purchases.
