TSM Nordic, the joint venture between Norway’s Telenor and local bank DNB, this week announced two vendors for its NFC-based mobile payments system ahead of a planned Q1 2014 commercial launch in the country.

The venture has chosen Gemalto to supply a trusted service manager (TSM) hub and Giesecke & Devrient for an OTA NFC solution, which will remotely manage the secure element in a subscriber’s NFC smartphone.

At launch next year, subscribers will be able to make payments via their NFC smartphones at the point-of-sale using the virtual version of a single card, a Visa debit card issued by DNB, the country’s largest bank.

Earlier this year, TSM Nordic selected Taiwan’s Toro to supply the mobile wallet for its service which will hold the service’s virtual cards. Telenor is using the Valyou brand for its wallet.

TSM Nordic is in talks with a further four banks – Skandiabanken, Entercard, Sparebank 1 and Fana Sparebank – about putting further cards in the wallet too. It is also talking to MasterCard and Amex too.

The venture has also made an offer to the country’s other mobile operators to join its service.

Beyond payments at the point-of-sale, future services available via NFC smartphone will include coupons, loyalty, building access and ticketing.

The launch early next year is billed as a national service although availability will depend on where merchants have enabled their point-of-sale terminals for contactless payments. The operator says, unsurprisingly, that the greatest availability is likely to be in Oslo.

Gemalto’s hub acts a connection point from which banks, operators, public transport authorities and other service providers can add their services in an interoperable manner.

TSM Nordic’s aim is to extend its service across the Nordic region, although it has no timescale for the plan.
