Swisscom is set to launch an NFC-based mobile payments service on 1 July, according to local media reports. Crucially, rivals Orange and Sunrise are also on board with the project.

The country’s leading operator hopes users will replace their physical wallet and credit cards with its Tapit service.

And roping in its smaller rivals should improve its chances of success.

Swisscom announced the project back in autumn last year.

In addition to contactless payments, Swisscom is mulling other services such as using NFC-based smartphones as replacements for building passes.
