Fast-growing online and mobile payments firm Stripe might work with mobile operators as a means to extend its reach into the developing world, according to Gigaom.

Co-founder and president John Collison briefly mentioned that Stripe might “work with the big financial networks that are growing up around mobile carriers in emerging markets”.

Although it is not stated, the most obvious partner for Stripe is M-Pesa, the world’s leading mobile money service which is present in nine countries.

The comment came following an announcement that reflects the firm’s increasingly international bent.

Users of the Stripe API can now accept payments in 130 currencies, up from the handful that can accept it now. Its payments platform is still only available in North America and Europe but Stripe customers can now sell goods to users outside those countries in their native currency.
