Situation Sthlm, the Stockholm magazine sold by homeless people, has completed a one-month trial that enables its street vendors to accept card payments using a smartphone and a card reader supplied by local firm iZettle.

The magazine has experienced “a positive trend during the trial”, said iZettle, by offering an additional payment option to those making a donation.

Previously Situation Sthlm vendors could accept payments in only two ways: Via a SMS-based system or good, old-fashion cash.

The magazine wants to upgrade the trial over the coming month by equipping more vendors with smartphones and card readers.

Situation Sthlm is written by professional journalists and then sold by homeless people as a means to provide them with an income.

However, it is unclear how the funds raised by the new card payment method are then directed back to the vendors.
