Chipset vendor STMicroelectronics is eager to strengthen its position in the NFC market by extending the user’s ability to read, write and transfer information on its memory chips to a broader range of industrial and consumer applications. To this end, the company has launched a new Android app which is compatible with its M24LR64 wireless memory chip.

When used in combination with the chipset, the company’s new app allows users to communicate with a wide range of electronic devices from an NFC-enabled smartphone, says the company. These include medical devices, home appliances, consumer electronics products and meters. The app is available free of charge from the Android Market. STMicroelectronics hopes innovation such as its new app will boost its presence in the NFC chipset market where NXP is the market leader. Other leading players in the NFC market include Inside Secure.
