Mobile point-of-sale provider Square has hired Kevin Burke, a former Visa exec, to head up its customer acquisitions, as well as encourage take-up of its Register service and back office tools internationally.

Burke was most recently chief marketing officer, core products, for Visa, where he led global and country marketing for the credit card giant’s consumer and commercial products.

Square CEO Jack Dorsey last month announced worldwide availability of its back office software. Previously, it had only been available in the US, Canada and Japan.

However, the company will not immediately launch its distinctive Square-shaped dongle globally. The dongle enables businesses to accept payment from their customers on smartphones or tablets. International availability of the dongle will come later on a case-by-case basis, said Dorsey.

The firm is also ratcheting up its business domestically. In the US, merchants using its service have just processed more than $100 million in one day (5 December) for the first time.

That was one of a series of claims made by Square to show the level of penetration it enjoys. Another statistic was that one in four active debit or credit cards in the US made a payment via Square this year. And, taken together, Square’s merchant base make up the thirteenth largest retailer in the US.
