Mobile payments provider Square has struck a deal with Wal-Mart so that its card reader will be sold in the retail giant’s stores throughout the US. In an interview with Bloomberg, chief operating officer Keith Rabois (pictured), said the company has a “mission is to make Squre ubiquitous”, in what increasingly appears is a fight to gain retail presence between a number of payment-device contenders.

Square says its card-reader, which enables users to accept payments on their smartphone, is now sold in more than 9,000 retail outlets, including those of Wal-Mart. In addition it is available in Apple Stores, Target, Radioshack and Best Buy outlets. But Square’s rivals are also active in the US retail market. Two months ago Intuit announced that its card reader, which performs a similar function to Square’s, would go on sale across all 2,300 of US mobile operator Verizon Wireless’s stores.
