Square has hired Demetrios Marantis, a former member of President Obama’s cabinet, to head up its international regulatory policy. It is the latest hire in a recent spate of executive comings and goings at the US-based payments firm.

Marantis’ international role reflects past talk of overseas ambition by Square, although the service is still only available in North America. The appointment, however, comes shortly after the hire of Francoise Brougher in April to head up international expansion. The new recruits suggest expansion abroad might be imminent.

More recently, the company made another hire last week with the addition of Alex Petrov as vice president of partnerships but lost Rob van Behren, a highly-rated engineer who co-created Google Wallet and who subsequently worked for Square. No reason was given for his departure to Braintree.

Latest recruit Marantis most recently served as the acting United States Trade Representative, the country’s chief trade negotiator.
