Spanish bank La Caixa plans to roll out 200,000 passive NFC stickers to its heaviest mobile banking and contactless card users in Barcelona, reports NFC Times.

The TAP Visa stickers – which are attached to mobile devices – carry a Visa payWave EMV application that can be used to make payments at the 500,000 Visa payWave-enabled terminals in Spain.

When making purchases of more than EUR20, users will be asked to enter their PIN codes into the payment terminal but will not be required to insert their card.

La Caixa was involved in a large NFC trial in the town of Sitges near Barcelona in 2010 but has decided to commercially launch NFC services before the technology is fully rolled out across Spain.

Barclaycard launched passive contactless stickers in the UK in April with its PayTag scheme for Visa cardholders.
