The commercial launch of NFC-based services in Singapore is running late, according to NFC Times. The country’s regulator, the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA), mandated commercial launches eight months after awarding a contract to a single consortium to build a NFC-based system at the end of October last year but none have happened yet, it says.

Singapore has opted for the model of a single NFC infrastructure with multiple competing service providers using it. The consortium chosen to build the city-state’s NFC system is led by Gemalto and also includes Citibank, DBS Bank, contactless payment provider EZ-Link as well as its three mobile operators SingTel, Starhub and M1 but has yet to deliver, according to the story.

The IDA’s original aim was for at least three mobile payment services at launch with others to follow as rival providers accessed the wholesale NFC system. The story quotes sources who say a revised timetable for launch means they are now two months away.
