PayPal and local partner SoftBank have launched a new mobile-payments package in Japan that means business owners can still take incoming calls while processing customer payments via their smartphone.

The new package includes an Android handset as well as the PayPal Here card reader, stickers, a guide book and marketing materials that explain how the merchant can accept card payments.

Adding an Android handset to the mix leaves the business owner’s own smartphone free for incoming calls.

“Put simply, some of them [merchants] just don’t want to take payments on their personal mobile phone. No one wants to be caught deciding whether to take a payment or answer a phone call from a loved one,” blogged Elena Wise, Paypal’s country manager for Japan.

The new package, which will be sold in Softbank stores, is data-only with no voice calls. It costs JPY 1,750 ($17.50) per month. There is no additional charge for the handset. PayPal says the cost is about one third of a full-service mobile package in Japan.

In addition, the US company says it is effectively making its card reader free in Japan by offering a credit to a merchant’s PayPal account after their first transaction via PayPal Here. Previously, the reader cost between JPY 1,260 and JPY 1,440.

PayPal formed a partnership with Japanese operator Softbank a year ago to offer its PayPal Here card reader in the country.
