Telefonica, Visa Europe, Gemalto and CaixaBank are to jointly offer a mobile payments app to the 3,500 delegates at this month’s Mobile World Congress 2013.

The app, developed by Telefonica Digital, will enable delegates to make mobile contactless payments in the Fira Gran Via venue, as well as elsewhere across Barcelona.

The payments app is part of the NFC Experience at the show which runs 25-28 February.

Delegates will use a virtual prepaid card for mobile payments. The card is designed to work with Visa’s contactless technology.

The app comes preloaded with EUR15 with which delegates can make payments at the venue and at 16,000 terminals around the city enabled with Visa’s contactless technology, as well as in 700 taxis in which CaixaBank has installed a payment capability.

The card is issued by MoneyToPay, a new subsidiary for the prepaid card business set up by CaixaBank.

Delegates will use an NFC-based Xperia smartphone provided by Sony, as well as wallet technology from Telefonica. The NFC-enabled SIMs for the service, which are pre-loaded with the Visa app, are supplied by Gemalto.
