Chipset vendor NXP says it has reached 200 smartphone and tablet design wins for NFC technology, according to the company’s second quarter results. This is an increase from the figure of 130 design wins that was reported by NXP in its full-year 2011 results, indicating the addition of 70 new design wins for NFC handsets in the last two quarters.  It had 90 design wins at the end of Q3 2011.

The company, which is the leading NFC chipset supplier, works with a number of mobile handset vendors including Samsung, Google, Nokia, Sony Mobile and ZTE, it said its quarterly announcement.

The company supports Android OS with its NFC technology and said it will support Windows too. Asked on the call about NFC for Apple's iOS, NXP's CEO Richard Clemmer did not comment. There has been renewed speculation recently about the inclusion of NFC in the new iPhone.

NXP’s identification business unit, which includes NFC chipset sales, reported quarterly revenues of US$234 million, an increase of 25 percent sequentially. Year-on-year revenue also grew (from US$194 million). However overall NXP saw a revenue decline to US$1.09 billion from US$1.12 billion a year earlier. The company made a loss of US$74 million compared to net profit of US$97 million.

Other partners it mentioned in its analyst call were Gemalto, Giesecke & Devrient and Oberthur, the leading trusted service manager (TSM) suppliers.
