Nigerian mobile payments firm Paga processed a total of $1 billion from 17 million transactions since its launch, its CEO said.

“Thx to @mypaga users for getting us across the major milestone of US$1bn in txn value processed from 17m txns! Think Payments, Think Paga!”, according to an enthusiastic tweet from founder and CEO Tayo Oviosu.

The milestone was passed in August by the firm which made its debut in 2011, according to Oviosu’s previous tweet.

Paga’s website boasts it can work with the most basic phone and is independent of individual mobile networks. Users can either open their own account or go to a Paga agent. Other services include buying/sending airtime credits, bill payments, and retail payments.

The firm offers several channels for consumers to use Paga, including SMS, online, mobile application, USSD, or IVR.
