Two of Africa’s leading operator groups — MTN and Orange — have announced strong quarterly growth in mobile money subscribers.

MTN added two million registered mobile money subscribers during the quarter, taking its total up to 22.2 million.

Meanwhile Orange Money attracted an additional 1.2 million subscribers during the same period, bringing its total to 12 million.

Despite the update on sub numbers, neither operator shared how much revenue is generated by their money bases, or even how many are active users.

Both are among the leading operator groups in Africa. MTN’s operations include South Africa and Nigeria, while Orange’s footprint includes Cameroon, Egypt, Guinea, Mali and Cote d’Ivoire. They both also have operations in the Middle East.

Many operators have sought to reproduce the successful deployment by Safaricom of its M-Pesa service in Kenya by concentrating on money transfer before trying to upsell users on more sophisticated financial services.
