MCX, the venture backed by leading US retailers, has unveiled the brand and app for its proposed mobile payment service.

However, the launch of CurrentC is only a private pilot in select locations around the country, which will expand during 2014. Regional and national rollouts are scheduled for next year.

MCX is heavily backed by leading retailers including GAP, Sears, 7-Eleven, Target and Walmart.

But the venture faces the potential threat of competition from Apple, if reports this week are correct, in addition to the presence of Softcard (formerly Isis) which is already active in the payments market with a similar offering.

The standalone app is available for both iOS and Android devices. Its functionality can also be added to merchants’ own apps.

CurrentC, which utilises QR code technology, has a number of features it hopes will draw in consumers, including automatic application of exclusive offers, coupons and promotions, and a simpler way for consumers to organise and apply their loyalty cards.
