Fast food giant McDonald’s is using PayPal technology for a mobile payments trial, according to a Reuters story. McDonald’s is testing a service that enables users in 30 restaurants in France to order food through a McDonald’s app on their smartphones, or place an order online, and then pay via PayPal. The same users then collect their food at a separate queue in the test locations.

In addition, the fast-food chain earlier this year ran a mobile payments demo at a conference for franchisees in Orlando, Florida. The demo was for a more advanced service than the one in France which enabled users to order and pay using PayPal’s wallet and app. However the demo was for technologies that were at least two years away from deployment.

There are no indications that the trials will necessarily lead to a more widespread commercial deployment by McDonald's. PayPal has made much of its strategy of partnering with leading US merchants, such as Home Depot. However some analysts have said the payments firm suffered a setback with the news that rival Square recently formed a wide-ranging partnership with Starbucks.
