Vodacom’s M-Pesa mobile money service in Tanzania has 4.2 million active users, according to Vodafone’s H1 2012/13 financial results.

M-Pesa is generally viewed as having been a success in Tanzania, although not on the same scale as Kenya. But other countries, such as South Africa, have found it difficult to keep users engaged and active.

Apart from the Tanzanian figures, Vodafone’s first half results did not appear to make any mention of mobile money numbers.

In Kenya, M-Pesa is offered by the country’s dominant operator Safaricom under licence from Vodafone, which also holds a 40 percent stake in the Kenyan operator.
