Mobile operator KT says Korea already has five million NFC handsets in use by cellular subscribers and predicts that number will rise to 20 million by the end of this year, according to a report in NFC World. The most popular service is using a prepaid account preloaded on mobile handsets to pay for transport including bus, underground trains and taxis, says the report. KT predicts that public transport will again figure strongly as a driver for NFC in 2012 as the prepaid account is rolled out nationally with a credit card version to be added. The operator is also looking to advertising as a source of growth for NFC.
