Indonesia’s third-largest operator Indosat has struck an agreement that will enable users of its Dompetku money service to receive payments sent from overseas.

The agreement is with the mobile remittance specialist Homesend, a joint venture between MasterCard, eServGlobal and BICs.

The operator, which has 55 million mobile connections, already offers a domestic remittance service within Indonesia.

Striking a deal with Homesend, which acts as a global hub for mobile money service providers, means Indosat does not have to strike agreements one-by-one with other operators or wallet providers.

Overseas users can send cash for Indosat users to collect at 24,000 locations around the country.

The new service with Homesend also enables the operator to move beyond wallet-to-wallet transfer to embrace cash-to-wallet and cash-to-cash transactions.

Indosat is interested in rolling out more mobile money services, CEO Alexander Rusli told Mobile World Live a few months ago.

Speaking ahead of Mobile Asia Expo, Rusli listed insurance, microfinance, payment cards, NFC cards, e-commerce and mobile payment processing as being on the operator’s radar.

The operator launched its existing Dompetku service in partnership with local bank QNB Kesawan in July last year. The pre-paid wallet enables users to make payments in both physical and virtual stores, as well as domestic remittances.
