Google is working on a project called Pony Express, which will let Gmail users receive and pay bills directly from their inbox instead of through the service provider’s website, according to a document seen by Re/code.

The service will be made available in the fourth quarter and can be accessed via a browser or the new ‘Inbox by Gmail’ app.

Google is apparently partnering with third-party vendors that print and mail out bills, although it is not clear if it is also working directly with service providers.

To use the service, Google users will be vetted based on personal information such as address and social security number and they may also have to provide a full credit card number.

Having access to such information could help Google refine how its ads are targeted and may even open up a path for it to enter the personal finance or lending industry.

Other features of Pony Express include the option to share bills with other users and access customer service contact information for service providers.

Google has not made an official comment regarding the new service.

Last month, the company struck a deal with three US operators behind rival NFC-based payment provider Softcard, as it attempts to revive its struggling Wallet service.
