Following speculation, Google today started the rollout in the US of Android Pay, claiming it is already accepted at more than one million locations across the country.

The payment app also stores gift and loyalty cards and specials offers. “We’ll be rolling out gradually over the next few days, and this is just the beginning,” said Pali Bhat, Director of Product Management, Android Pay, in a blog.

The search giant will continue to add more features, banks and store locations in the coming months, in a bid to widen Android Pay’s appeal.

Indeed, Google’s announcement, with its lengthy mentions of banks and retailers, was reminiscent of an Apple Pay update, as the rivals strive for ubiquity.

And other competitor, Samsung Pay, is set to launch in the States later this month, further intensifying competition.

Android Pay works with all NFC-enabled Android devices (running KitKat 4.4+), on any mobile carrier, at every NFC-based location across the US, Google claimed.

Existing Google Wallet users will be able to access Android Pay through an update to their Wallet app. For new users, Android Pay will be available for download on Google Play in the next few days, and will come preinstalled on new NFC-enabled Android phones from AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless.

Android Pay will support credit and debit cards from the four leading credit cards: American Express, Discover, MasterCard and Visa. These cards are issued by US banks and credit unions, including American Express, Bank of America, Discover, Navy Federal Credit Union, PNC, Regions Bank, USAA, and U.S. Bank.

“Citi and Wells Fargo will be available in the next few days, Capital One is coming soon, and we’re adding new banks all the time,” added the blog post.

The one million-plus locations where Android Pay is accepted include many familiar names such as Bloomingdales, Coca Cola, Macy’s, Pepsi, Rite Aid, Subway and Toys R Us.

Later in 2015, users will also be able to use Android Pay for payments within apps. And with select merchants, users will soon be able to transmit loyalty cards and special offers with just a tap.
