Gemalto secures NFC SIM certification

04 DEC 2012

Mobile security vendor Gemalto’s UpTeq NFC high-end SIM has been certified by global payment networks America Express, MasterCard and Visa.

The UpTeq NFC high-end SIM will now support mobile contactless payment and other secure services via the American Express ExpressPay, MasterCard PayPass and Visa payWave NFC services. The technology has already been approved by chip-payment technology company EMVCo.

Gemalto touts the ability to add new NFC services to the SIM, such as mobile identification, coupon redemption, loyalty schemes and transit cards.

UpTeq is being deployed in Singapore by operators M1, SingTel and StarHub and will soon support local payment standard CEPAS, which is used for low-value purchases. The high-end SIM will soon be customised for a number of operators, including KDDI in Japan, Rogers in Canada and Orange in France.
