Giesecke & Devrient is supplying NFC-capable SIM cards to Nòverca, an Italian MVNO, in what the company says is the country’s “very first pilot project for mobile payments” launched by local bank Banca Intesa Sanpaolo. Six hundred of the bank’s employees and customers in the cities of Milan and Turin are participating in the trial using mobile phones to make contactless payments at more than 3,000 point-of-sale terminals in locations such as shops and restaurants. The terminals are operated by Setefi which is the bank’s payments processor and card issuer.  All participants in the trial are issued with NFC-enabled Samsung Wave S5780 smartphones. The SIM cards are equipped with MasterCard PayPass technology for contactless payments.
