G-Xchange, the e-commerce unit of Philippines operator Globe Telecom, has announced the resignation of its president, Paolo Baltao, effective December 1, 2014. He will be replaced by Xavier Marzan, who will also keep his current post as GXI’s COO.

Baltao (pictured) spent the last decade building the operator’s emerging mobile money business, including mobile payments, m-commerce, and mobile financial services.

His departure appears sudden given the announcement came out two days after his actual departure from the operator. His destination is unknown.

Globe is credited (along with rival Smart) as being an innovator in the mobile money space. Among its achievements have been GCash, its service for sending and receiving remittances.

And SMEs which use Globe’s mobile point-of-sale reader began accepting payment from Visa debit and credit cards through Globe Charge.

Enabling small businesses to accept Visa cards broadens the demographic to which they can appeal, he had said at the time.

Back in 2012, he gave a piece of advice at the GSMA NFC & Mobile Money Summit in Milan: follow where consumers make payments, covering everything from retail to utility bills.

“Selfish as it sounds, I try to make a buck whenever money is transferred,” Baltao had said during his keynote.

He also helped GXI introduce products like Power Pay Plus and American Express Virtual Pay.
