The winding up of the Sixpack mobile payments consortium in 2012 left its members free to go their own ways, and now Dutch bank Rabobank has unveiled a 2014 launch for its solo effort.

Rabobank claims its commercial service next year will be the first in the Netherlands to enable users to make NFC-based mobile payments with their smartphones.

The bank is working with vendor Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) on the service.

Rabobank, along with ABN Amro and ING, set up a joint venture with the country’s three leading mobile operators (KPN, Vodafone and T-Mobile) in 2010 to jointly build NFC infrastructure. But the group fell apart with the partners complaining about how tough it was to acquire regulatory clearance.

Instead, the three banks agreed to an NFC pilot with KPN running until the end of 2013. The banks said they would then decide on how to proceed with individual services. Now Rabobank has made its intentions known.

Rabobank customers wanting to access the service need to apply online and will be set up remotely via G&D’s managed service that will connect to their smartphone.
