The Payments Council, the UK body with responsibility for ensuring the smooth running of the country’s payments infrastructure, is predicting a significant increase in payments made by consumers using their mobile devices over the next decade.

Mobile payments and internet banking will contribute to consumers making more one-off payments from their accounts, according to a new report from the body.

It forecasts the figure will rise from 356 million payments in 2012 to around 1.5 billion in 2022.

The use of cash and cheques will fall over the next decade, says the report, as consumers make greater use of contactless cards and mobile payments.

The Payments Council itself is eager to get in on the act. Next year it will launch its own service that enables P2P transactions between individuals using only their mobile numbers.

The report says around 32.5 million people in 2012 accessed their bank accounts using a remote channel, of which 10 million used a mobile device.
