Silicon valley darling Clinkle, which plans to offer mobile payments to students, has appointed former Netflix CFO Barry McCarthy (pictured) as its chief operating officer.

The well-backed start-up has brought in McCarthy, who spent more than a decade at Netflix before leaving in 2010, ahead of its launch next year.

Clinkle has a slew of high-profile venture capital backers who ponied up $25 million in backing for the start-up in June.

Since leaving Netflix, McCarthy has advised a venture firm and sat on the boards of various tech firms.

However, Clinkle has yet to reveal much meat about its plans, beyond its target market being the student sector in the US.

Even less clear is what technology will be used by the firm. For instance, it plans to offer mobile payments in campus outlets, one of its key services, but has not said whether it will deploy NFC or an alternative such as QR codes or cloud technology.
