NTT Docomo and MasterCard are to launch a service that enables Japanese mobile subscribers roaming abroad to make payments using their NFC-based smartphones, a potentially attractive idea for travellers not carrying foreign currency.

Docomo customers will be able to make payments with their NFC handset at those locations such as shops and restaurants where MasterCard’s PayPass technology is accepted. There are currently 1.2 million such locations in more than 50 countries.

Despite its potential among travellers, such NFC-based roaming payment services are still relatively rare.

The service becomes commercially available on 5 February next year.

To access the new service, subscribers must use Docomo’s iD mobile credit payment system, in addition to having a NFC-based smartphone.
