Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan’s largest mobile operator, will shortly launch a mobile payment service that will enable users to scan and buy goods with their smartphones, according to Focus Taiwan.

Subscribers will make payments by scanning QR codes situated at point-of-sale in locations such as convenience stores and restaurants, as well as taxis.

The same service is also designed to work with scanning TV screens and presumably for online transactions too, although the operator does not specify it.

The aim is to launch the service as soon as June, according to comments from Joseph Kuo, managing director of the value-added services department at Chunghwa Telecom’s mobile business group.

The operator has partnered with several banks in an application for regulatory approval from the Financial Supervisory Commission.

However, the report does not explain the extent of deployment for the new service.

Separately, Chunghwa Telecom announced plans last autumn for an NFC trial that will go on for at least six months. At the same time, the operator was quoted as saying it will purchase “fewer than one million” NFC handsets in 2013, indicating plans for a commercial launch at some stage.
