A service in Indonesia that uses BlackBerry Messenger for P2P money transfers has attracted 60,000 users in the 90 days since its launch at the end of February, indicating it is on track for an end-2013 target of 200,000.

The figures were released by UK firm Monitise, one of the companies behind BBM Money which enables user to send and receive funds within a chat conversation on a BlackBerry smartphone.

BBM Money was developed by BlackBerry with local financial institution Permatabank and Astra Graphia Information Technology, another local company, as well as Monitise.

The service was launched in February.

As well as P2P money transfer, the service enables users to top-up any mobile phone and transfer money to bank accounts.

BlackBerry represents over 50 per cent of the smartphone base in Indonesia, according to the announcement.
