Apple Pay will launch next month in Japan using Felica, a technology developed by Sony which is used for public transport as well as everyday purchases.

The company announced that iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus and Apple Watch Series 2 will support FeliCa Type-F NFC contactless technology for the October launch.

Japanese users will be able to pay with their Apple devices using a virtual version of the popular Suica prepaid card, used for public transport and shopping.

The Felica-based card is offered by JR East, a railway company serving the Tokyo area which describes itself as the world’s largest transit operator.

Apple is also introducing a feature with Maps in iOS 10 so commuters can easily find ride details, including fare breakdowns with Suica pricing.

Apple Pay will also support other popular Japanese credit and prepaid cards, said a statement.

These include cards issued by AEON, Credit Saison, JCB, Mitsubishi UFJ Nicos, Orient Corporation, Sumitomo Mitsui Card, Toyota Finance, UC Cards and View Card, and operators KDDI, NTT Docomo and Softbank.

Together these represent more than three-quarters of all credit card spending in Japan, with major global and domestic networks like American Express, Mastercard, JCB, iD and QUICPay, the announcement said.

The Apple Pay plan for Japan was reported last month.
