ANZ, the only one of Australia’s big four banks prepared to work with Apple Pay, added 500,000 customers with a Mastercard credit card to the service.

Previously, only ANZ account holders with a Visa card could get Apple Pay. That arrangement had been in place since April.

“Our customers have responded well to the launch of Apple Pay and now our customers can make mobile payments with Mastercard credit cards as well,” said Matt Boss, ANZ’s managing director of products and marketing.

The mood is in contrast with the how the bank’s three main rivals — National Australia Bank, Commonwealth Bank of Australia and Westpac — are in strife with Apple.

The banks are urging the country’s competition regulator to allow them to negotiate access to Apple Pay on a collective basis. Apple is strongly resisting their proposal.

Popularity of Apple Pay in Australia is unsurprising since contactless payment in general has seen a good takeup. Mastercard said seven out of ten of its transactions in the country are now made using contactless technology.
