Wearables firm Jawbone struck a deal with credit card giant American Express in the US whereby users can tap-and-pay in locations such as shops and restaurants using a virtual card loaded on the forthcoming UP4, a NFC-enabled fitness tracker, that will be available from this summer.

Users must be Amex cardholders to make payments on the UP4, which will cost $199. Jawbone has not said whether it plans similar alliances with rivals Visa or MasterCard, or indeed PayPal.

News of the alliance first broke earlier this week.

The UP4 features the same design and multi-sensor platform as the UP3, which is set to launch next week. Except the new band will also feature contactless payments.

Card members with a UP4 tracker will be able to connect to an eligible Amex card via the latest UP app for iOS or Android.

Users open the UP app and select “Payments” in the Settings menu. Then they log in with the same americanexpress.com User ID and Password used for their online account. Finally, they select an eligible card to feature on their UP4.

The NFC-enabled UP4 will work anywhere Amex contactless payments are accepted in the US.
