E-commerce giant Amazon has launched its own mobile wallet application on Amazon Appstore and Google Play, according to a TechCrunch report.

Amazon Wallet allows users to store and organise gift and loyalty cards, which can be scanned or typed in. They then become available as a barcode, QR code, text or image, which enables them to be redeemed at point-of-sale.

The app also lets consumers check the balance of their stored gifts at a wide range of supported merchants.

Listed as a beta app, it also comes pre-installed on new Fire smartphones.

Amazon has a supporting website for the app, where users can log in to add other gift cards to the account.

The website offers ways to manage other payment methods, such as credit and debit cards, but these can only be used while shopping in Amazon.com, not at point-of-sale.
