Bharti Airtel’s money service is showing “healthy” growth across its African operations, according to its Q2 results.

The total base of Airtel Money users in Africa grew by 59 per cent to 8.4 million in the three months to end September compared to the same period last year. And the total number of transactions swelled by 84 per cent to 241.4 million compared to 2014.

Airtel said the total value of transactions on the money platform grew by 24 per cent to $3.76 billion in the current quarter. However, the company gave no indication of what revenue was generated by the activity, and whether it was profitable or not.

Plus, the company did not supply any figures for how Airtel Money performed in its Indian home market. There is growing interest in such services in India, not least from the government which sees it as a means to push financial inclusion.

Earlier this year, the Reserve Bank of India approved the provisional award of a so-called Payments Bank licence to Airtel Money Commerce Services Limited, along with a number of other firms. Other leading operators also numbered among the licence winners.
