Swedish vendor Accumulate has introduced a new solution that uses Apple’s iBeacon technology for mobile payments as well as proximity marketing.

Bluetooth Low Energy-based iBeacon technology communicates with nearby iOS devices. It also works with Android devices.

iBeacon is usually deployed for indoor marketing but Accumulate’s Close Payment with Close Beacon solution uses the technology for payments too.

The firm said the solution will work with existing payment methods such as credit or debit cards, as well as wallet-based services.

After registering, a user can pay for an item by standing close to a cash register and then approving the purchase with a push of a button on their smartphone, the firm said.

The solution can incorporate loyalty cards, coupons and vouchers. ID cards can be included in the online wallet too, according to Accumulate.

Close Payment with Close Beacon also brings mobile proximity marketing to a store. The merchant can target offerings to the customer when he or she enters the store, a more common usage of iBeacon technology.

“Security and integrity are key for mobile payments to work, with Close Beacon we bring new innovative security for BLE/iBeacon which makes it possible to use for mobile payments. This also creates higher integrity for mobile proximity marketing preventing spam, fraudulent behavior and other tampering attempts” said Accumulate’s co-founder and CTO Magnus Westling (pictured).
